The Project

The Brief

Weeds had taken hold along the base of the garden’s stone boundary wall, and the border along it had gone bare and untidy. The brief was to reclaim the border, get it planted properly, and set it up so it wouldn’t just revert to weeds within a season.

The Approach

We cleared the weeds back from the wall, prepared the soil properly rather than just planting into what was there, and put in a shrub border with a mulch layer to suppress regrowth and hold moisture. The mulch does real work here, not just a finishing touch, it’s what stops the border reverting to weeds by next summer.

The Result

A clean, planted border along the wall that actually looks after itself, with mulching doing the ongoing work of keeping weeds down between our maintenance visits.

Rathgar’s period homes often come with mature stone or brick boundary walls, and the border running along them is usually the part of the garden that gets neglected first, since it’s out of the way and easy to ignore until it’s fully overgrown. Getting the soil right and mulching properly is what actually keeps a wall border looking kept, not just a one-off clear-out.
