The Project

The Brief

A small courtyard garden with dead, patchy grass that never really grew back after the last dry summer, and no proper paved area to actually sit out in. The client wanted low-maintenance ground cover and a hard surface that wouldn’t need constant upkeep.

The Approach

We excavated the old lawn area, laid a compacted sub-base and drainage layer, then fitted artificial turf alongside new paving sized to the courtyard’s proportions. The paving base was built the same way we’d build a full patio, properly compacted, correctly falling away from the house, not just bedded on sand.

The Result

A courtyard that’s usable every day of the year, no mud, no dead grass, and a paved area that drains properly after rain instead of pooling.

Knocklyon’s smaller courtyard and side gardens are common on the estate-built homes in the area, and a lot of them share the same issue: not enough sun reaching the lawn to keep grass healthy, especially in gardens boxed in by fencing or a neighbouring wall. Artificial turf and hard landscaping solve a problem that reseeding the lawn every spring never actually fixes.
