Why decks rot, warp, and turn green within five years
Most decking problems start underneath, with a subframe built from untreated or under-treated timber, posts not isolated from ground moisture, and joists spaced too far apart for the deck boards to span without flex. Add an Irish climate of constant rain and intermittent sun, and you've got the perfect conditions for rot, mould, and structural movement within a few seasons.
The other common failure is poor airflow. Decking built flush to the ground with no gap traps moisture underneath and turns the surface green with algae by the second summer.
How we build decks that last
Every deck starts with a subframe of pressure-treated timber, C16 or C24 structural grade, not fence timber. Posts are isolated from direct ground contact using metal post bases set in concrete. Joists are spaced at 400mm centres maximum. The gap from the underside of the frame to the ground is maintained for airflow.
Board gaps are set correctly for expansion. Fixings are hidden or stainless steel, not galvanised, which bleeds rust stains within two years. The whole deck is a structural build, not just boards screwed onto whatever's easiest.
